Stuck in Survival Mode? Learn to Feel Safe In Your Body Again.

Apr 18, 2026

You might look like you're coping on the outside. You're getting through the day, showing up for your children and holding everything together, but inside feels different. There's a constant sense of pressure, your mind doesn't switch off, your body feels on edge, overwhelmed or completely shut down, and no matter how much you try to "think your way out of it".... nothing really shifts.

This isn't a mindset problem. This is your nervous system trying to protect you. When your system has experienced stress, trauma or long periods of overwhelm it doesn't just forget. It adapts and learns how to stay on high alert, or how to shut everything down to cope. Overtime this can become your normal.

What survival mode can feel like: It doesn't always look dramatic, sometimes it looks like:

  • Overthinking everything
  • Feeling constantly anxious or on edge
  • Snapping then feeling guilty
  • Struggling to relax even when nothing is wrong
  • Feeling disconnected from yourself or your life
  • Always staying busy but never really feeling present with life.

Or the opposite:

  • Feeling flat or numb
  • Low energy and no motivation
  • Wanting to hide away
  • Struggling to feel anything at all

Both are survival responses. Your body is not working against you, this is the part most people miss. Your body is not broken, overreacting and its not the problem, its doing exactly what it learned to keep you safe. The issue is, it hasn't realised you might be safe now.

Why insight alone doesn't change this. You might already understand your patterns, you might know where they come from and have talked them over and over again. But your body still reacts, because healing doesn't just happen through insight alone. Your nervous system needs to feel safety, and not just understand it.

This is where Somatic work comes in. Instead of trying to force change, fix yourself or push through, we slow down and start to gently work with the body by noticing what's happening. Building awareness of your responses and learning how to support your system back into safety. This isn't about the big, overwhelming shifts, it's small, consistent moments where your body begins to learn.. "I'm okay now".

You don't have to stay stuck here. Survival mode isn't who you are, it's something your system has learned, and anything learned can be gently unlearned. You can feel more present, more connected, more like yourself again.

If this resonates with you, this is the work I do with my clients, helping you understand your patterns, regulate your nervous system and build a sense of safety that lasts. If you're ready to begin you can book a 1:1 session with me below.
